The normalised ratio is the ratio of the patients prothrombin time to a control sample. It eliminates variation based on the PT assay. Two laboratories may report vastly different prothrombin times but the calculated INRs should remain similar.
The INR is an standardised measure of the PT. Its primary utility is in therapeutic monitoring of warfarin treatment.
