A palpable nodule protruding into the umbilicus resulting from metastasis of a cancer of the abdomen or pelvis. May be painful on palpation.
Sister Mary Joseph nodules are characteristic of multiple peritoneal metastases and generally indicate a poor prognosis.
Named after Sister Mary Joseph, a nun and surgical assistant to Mr William Mayo.
